Mom's Bean Tree
Today's
picture features one of mom's favorite trees: her "bean tree". She
loves that tree for several reasons, but I think the biggest reason of all is
because dad loved it so much.
Dad was intrigued by the long "beans" that hang down looking so much
like real beans that you just want to cook a bunch and see how they taste. I
remember him saying on several occasions "I know you can't eat 'em, but if
you could two beans would make a mess!".
There is a small wooden bridge that crosses the creek that runs through mom's
yard, and every time I walk across it I remember how dad would stand on it and
gaze at those beans. He was a very inquisitive man, always reading up on
something - trying to learn a little more about whatever he found interesting at
the time. I'm sure he read everything he could find about "bean
trees".
Mom and dad didn't plant the "bean tree" and it isn't even on their
property - the branches just happen to hang over the fence. But that tree is an
integral part of the landscape of mom's yard because it triggers fond memories
of dad and reminds us that we'll see him again some day.
