Today's picture features scenic Boone Lake in Johnson City, Tennessee.
The lake and dam were named for legendary explorer Daniel Boone, a man
who played a major role in our region's history. I
snapped this shot of the lake while standing on the boat dock at William DeVault Bridge.
The TVA began the construction of Boone Dam on the South Fork of the Holston
River in 1950 and finished it a short two years later. The resulting reservoir
provides wonderful opportunities for great fishing, swimming, boating and water
skiing in northeast Tennessee.
New homes like the one in the picture abound on the shores of Boone Lake, with
more being built all the time. It seems like everyone wants to build on
lakeshore property, so the available lots around Boone Lake are selling at a
premium - but the spectacular views and endless recreational opportunities make
the high prices seem reasonable.
Like all of the other TVA lakes in the region, Boone Lake has enhanced the
quality of life for everyone, not just the people who actually use the lake for
recreation. The hydroelectric generators in the dam provide up to 81,000
kilowatts of electric power - enough to light up thousands of northeast
Tennessee homes and businesses.
