An Old Fashioned "Brush Burning"
When Cheria and I moved into our new home last fall, one of the first things we
placed on our "to-do list" was cleaning out the overgrown fence row that hid our
long field from passers-by on the road. I finally got the job finished a few
days ago, but then I was stuck with six very large
brush piles to dispose of.
Yesterday evening we took care of that problem. My niece Melissa and her family
joined us along with Tami, Rob and Olivia for an old-fashioned "wienie and
marshmallow roast". While Rob, Brian and I got to work setting the brush piles
ablaze, Cheria, Tami and Melissa started bringing out the food. Before long those
six monster piles of brush had been reduced to six heaps of smoldering ashes -
and our bellies were full of hot dogs, roasted marshmallows and other goodies!
We didn't just get rid of those unsightly brush piles - we also had a wonderful
time talking and enjoying each other's company. The evening brought back
memories of long ago when our entire family would get together and burn our
tobacco beds. After all those years the smoke still smells the same, the roasted
wieners and marshmallows still taste just as good, and the kids still have a
blast - as do the adults. I just might have to find an excuse to pile
up some more brush!
