The State Line Drive-In Theater
Today's picture features the marquee for the State Line Drive-In Theater
in Elizabethton, TN. The Tri-Cities region of Tennessee & Virginia has
several local drive-in theaters that are still in operation.
The number of drive-in theaters in the U.S. reached its peak in the 1950s, topping out at
almost 4,000 nationwide. But the growing popularity of walk-in
multiplex theaters has long since caused most drive-ins to shut down (there are
just 432 in operation today). Apparently, movie-goer's nowadays prefer
watching a flick in the comfort of an indoor cinema, complete with Dolby
surround-sound audio.
Hopefully, there will always be a drive-in theater within easy driving distance
of where you live. After all, comfort aside, there is a certain special charm
about visiting a drive-in on a balmy summer night, fumbling with hot dogs and
popcorn while trying to watch the show through a less-than-clean windshield.
