Mount Rogers
Today's picture features the "rooftop of
Virginia". At 5,729 feet,
Mount Rogers is the highest peak in the state. The second highest peak,
Whitetop Mountain,
lies just a few miles away.
I was driving along U.S. Highway 11 near the small community of Meadowview, Va
when I saw the snowcapped peaks of Mt. Rogers and Whitetop rising above the
landscape. I stopped my car, placed my camera on the tripod and zoomed in on the
summit of Mt. Rogers - and the result is the "Picture Of The Day".
Mount Rogers is in the heart of the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area,
a 154,000 acre outdoorsman's paradise. The MRNRA offers many types of
outdoor activities to its visitors, but hiking has to be number one on the list.
There are hundreds of miles of trails within its boundaries including the
world-famous
Appalachian Trail (which passes within 1/2 mile of Mt. Rogers' summit).
Mount Rogers and Whitetop Mountain are both located just a short drive from
either Marion, Virginia or the beautiful town of
Damascus. You can consult
a map or simply show up and ask the locals for directions. Either way, you'll
find yourself at the "rooftop of Virginia" after taking a short drive through
some of the world's most beautiful scenery!
