Sagamore Hill

Today's picture features Sagamore Hill, the last permanent home of one of
America's most legendary Presidents: Theodore Roosevelt. Sagamore Hill is
located in Oyster Bay, Long Island, NY, and today it stands preserved just as it
was when Roosevelt himself resided there from 1887 to 1919. The official name of
Roosevelt's "Summer White House" - still in use today as a museum - is
Sagamore Hill National Historic Site.
Teddy Roosevelt lived what is now regarded as one of the most exciting lives of
any U.S. President. In fact, his career and interests led him all around the
world! At various times, he was all of the following:
- Recipient of both the Nobel Peace Prize and the Congressional
Medal of Honor
- A deputy sheriff in North Dakota
- A highly regarded diplomat
- Combat commander of a volunteer cavalry regiment
- Assistant Secretary of the Navy
- A Naval historian and strategist
- A noted general historian, biographer, essayist, editor, columnist,
and critic
- An author of 35 books
- A widely respected ornithologist
- An expert on and experienced hunter of big-game animals
- One of America's pioneering conservationists
- Governor of the state of New York
- Vice President of the United States
- President of the United States
In addition to all of those occupations, offices and activities, Roosevelt was also
quite a
family man, usually quitting work at 4:00 in the afternoon to spend some quality time with
his beloved children. Theodore Roosevelt lived large and enjoyed life, and many
prized possessions and artifacts from his storied life can be seen at Sagamore
Hill National Historic Site!
Note:
Photographer Michael Holve snapped this wonderful photo of Sagamore Hill literally
through his car window as he drove up the driveway toward the house!
