Beginning Spanish: A basic course in the Spanish language


 
As in English, comparisons in Spanish are very easy to understand and use. The following table lists the most used Spanish language comparisons.

Spanish Language Comparisons

más   more

menos   less

tan adj. como   as

tanto adj. como  as much

mejor   better

el mejor   the best
peor   worse

el peor   the worst

mayor   older (in age)

el mayor   the oldest

menor   younger

el menor   the youngest

Examples:

Ana es hermosa.   Ana is beautiful.
Rosa es más hermosa.   Rosa is more beautiful.

Esta lección es fácil.  This lesson is easy.
Esa lección es menos fácil.  That lesson is less easy.

María es tan inteligente como Luis.
María is as intelligent as Luis.

No canto tan bien como usted.
I don't sing as well as you.

Jorge tiene tanto dinero como tú.
Jorge has as much money as you do.

Ellos compraron tantas plumas como nosotros.
They bought as many pens as we did.

Juan es bueno.   Juan is good.
Lupe es mejor.   Lupe is better.
Enrique es el mejor.   Enrique is the best.

Alberto es malo.   Alberto is bad.
Carlos es peor.   Carlos is worse.
Miguel es el peor.   Miguel is the worst.

Luisa es mi hermana mayor.
Luisa is my older sister.

Elena es la mayor de las hermanas.
Elena is the oldest of the sisters.
