Beginning Spanish: A basic course in the Spanish language


 
This page lists the common Spanish language pronouns. There are generally two forms of pronouns in Spanish:

  1. The familiar form of a Spanish pronoun is used when you know the person on a first-name basis.
     
  2. The formal form is used when you know the person on a last-name basis.
     

Spanish subject pronouns

yo   I

   you (familar)

usted  you (formal)

él   he

ella   she
nosotros   we
nosotras   we

vosotros   you
vosotras   you
(plural, familiar)

ustedes   you
(plural, formal)

ellos   they
(masculine)

ellas   they
(feminine)
Examples:

Yo soy americano.
I am an American.

Él es mexicano.
He is a Mexican.

Ella es muy hermosa.
She is very beautiful.

Ellos son altos.
They are tall.

Usted habla inglés muy bien.
You speak English very well.

Nosotros tenemos mucho dinero.
We have a lot of money.

 

Direct object pronouns

me   me

te   you

lo   you, him, it
(masculine)

la   you, her, it
(feminine)
nos   us

os   you

los   you, them
(masculine)

las   you, them
(feminine)
Examples:

Rosa me ve.
Rosa sees me.

No lo compraron.
They did not buy it.

Antonio nos llamó anoche.
Antonio called us last night.

Luis quiere conocerte.
Luis wants to meet you.

Estamos buscándolos.
We're looking for them.

 

Indirect object pronouns

me  to me

te   to you

le   to you (a usted)
      to him (a él)
      to her (a ella)
nos   to us

os    to you

les
 
to you  (a ustedes)
  to them (a ellos)
  to them (a ellas)
Examples:

Juan me da la tiza.
Juan gives the chalk to me.

Le traigo el vaso a ella.
I am bringing the glass to her.

Quiero pagarte el dinero.
I want to pay you the money.

Está escribiéndonos una tarjeta de postal.
He is writing a post card to us.
