Today's picture features the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, one of the world's
premier yachting events. This test of human will and endurance has the
participants starting out in beautiful Sydney Harbour, then sailing on through the
Tasman Sea, Storm Bay and the Derwent River - a challenging course that covers
628 nautical miles!
Following a long-standing tradition, the Sydney Hobart Yacht Race always begins
on Boxing Day (December 26) with the prize being awarded about a week later. The first
event was held in 1945, making the 2007 race the 62nd running of Australia's most beloved sporting event.
The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race draws thousands of visitors to Australia every
summer on what has become a favorite Boxing Day vacation experience for those
who choose to spend their holidays "down under". The event is generously
sponsored by the Rolex Corporation and
organized by the Cruising Yacht
Club of Australia.
