Abingdon United Methodist Church
The beautiful town of Abingdon,
Virginia is home to many historic buildings, several of which are houses of
worship. Today's picture features a nighttime view of one of these beautiful
churches - Abingdon United Methodist Church.
The roots of this scenic church's congregation can be traced all the way back to
the latter part of the 18th century when a small group of Methodists began
meeting in private homes around the young town. Before long the group had built
their first church building.
Construction began on the current structure in 1883, and although there have
been many changes over the years the character of the original building and
congregation remain intact. Today, Abingdon United Methodist Church remains a
cornerstone of the Christian faith in the greater Abingdon area.
It was bitterly cold last night as I parked my car at the foot of "Court House
Hill" and began walking up main street towards the
Barter Theatre. I had been wanting a nighttime
photograph of the Barter for some time, and it seemed like a perfect time to take one
since there was a show in progress on the Barter stage and the building was well
lit up on the outside.
As I walked past the church, I was struck by the perfect lighting and the manger
scene on the front lawn. I stopped, set up my tripod and hurriedly snapped a few
pictures...which actually turned out better than the ones I took of the Barter a
few minutes later!
There are plenty of wonderful things to see in Old Abingdon, even after the sun
has gone down. Just be sure to bundle up in warm clothing if it happens to be
wintertime. Winter nights in Abingdon can get pretty cold, but there is no
better time to walk the brick sidewalks of the historic district - you'll have them mostly to yourself
and the sights are simply spectacular!
