Alaska Winter Sky
![A beautiful Alaska sky.](pic-of-the-day/alaska.jpg)

Wintertime in Alaska is a season of extremes. Alaska winters are
extremely long, extremely cold, and as today's picture shows - extremely
beautiful. This is such an amazing photo that I think I'll just sit back and
admire it while the man who took it tells you a bit about the circumstances
surrounding it.
"I took this photo at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks, shortly after 10:00
AM - during my work break. It's hard to believe that the sky displays such
colors, but this is a normal occurrence in the interior of Alaska, mostly in
December when there are perhaps from a few minutes to a couple of hours of
daylight each day. Sometimes the sky has shades of light-blue or pink colors.
On this particular December day, I noticed a beautiful pinkish glow on the sky,
so I snapped a few pictures with my new Canon Rebel XT set to full auto mode,
and was pleasantly surprised at how accurately the camera captured the colors.
The sun was very low on the sky, and located perhaps at a 45 degree angle to my
right. You will notice the orange-color sunlight reflected on the tree branches
above the house at the left of the photo. The city of Fairbanks is located under
the fog directly ahead in the horizon." - Ray Fernandez,
