Pickin' In The Parking Lot
Photos: Folks "makin' music" in a parking lot near Bristol, TN's
State
Street mural.
Bluegrass musicians love pickin', and they'll pick just about anywhere, as
today's pictures demonstrate quite well. They were taken last night during the
weekly Tuesday night Bluegrass performance on State Street in downtown Bristol,
TN.
While one band is performing on the stage, there will usually be two or three
others pickin' out in the parking lot. They might be warming up for their turn
in the spotlight or simply pickin' for fun.
It doesn't really matter - Bluegrass
musicians just
love pickin' and any excuse to do it will do!
Parkin' lot pickin' is something of a tradition in the Bluegrass world. It's the
same at Bluegrass festivals and venues all over the country - there will usually
be several groups pickin' in the parking lot while the regular performances take
place on the stage.
Sometimes you'll see an established band practicing before going on stage, but
often it will simply be 3 or 4 Bluegrass pickers who just happened to show up
and start making music together. The top photo shows one such group while the
one on the bottom features Teddy Helton and Robby Spencer, two well-known Bluegrass
pickers from our local area.
