Brush Piles
One of the things Cheria and I really like about our new place is the long 1.6
acre field that extends our yard some 600 feet along the side of the road. We
have dreamed up several uses for this plot of land, but first I had to clean the
thicket of brush, briars and overgrown trees from the fence row that parallels
the road.
I began that task shortly after moving in last fall, but winter quickly came
upon us and I had to put off finishing it until spring. Well, spring has sprung
and I have finally finished cleaning out that fence row - and I have six huge
brush piles to show for it!
The prospect of having to burn these large piles of brush brings back lots of
childhood memories - some good, some bad. I remember how as kids we used to drag
wood and pile it up to "burn" our tobacco beds. The intense heat from the fire
destroyed all the weeds and seeds so that when we sowed the tobacco seeds the
tobacco plants were the only things that came up. I hated dragging that wood!
But after the hard work was done we started in on the fun - roasting
marshmallows and "wieners" over the scorching hot open flames. I can still smell
those wonderful aromas today! I think we'll let our granddaughter
Olivia join us
when we burn these brush piles. The hard work is done, but she can surely help
us out with the fun part!
