Carver's Gap
Roan Mountain is a 6,000+ foot peak in the Blue Ridge mountains. Sitting astride
the Tennessee-North Carolina border, on a clear day you can see into both of
those states and neighboring Virginia.
Carver's gap offers easy access to the area's famous "balds"
(grassy open areas) as well as the Appalachian
Trail. This photo was taken from Round Bald (elev. 5,826 ft) which is just
up the ridge from Carver's Gap. In the picture, Johnson City, TN lies to the
northwest, the Virginia mountains are some distance to the north (straight
ahead), and the North Carolina mountains lie to the east.
The scenery of Carver's Gap and the Roan Mountain balds is considered by many
Appalachian Trail hikers to be among the most beautiful of the entire 2,160
miles of the trail.
