The Doe River Covered Bridge
|
Elizabethton, Tennessee's Doe River Covered Bridge is one of the most popular landmarks in upper east Tennessee. This historic covered bridge is by far Carter County's most photographed object. The bridge was constructed in 1882 using plain oak boards that were fastened together with hand-forged nails and threaded spikes. The cost was a then-huge sum of $3,000. This remarkable structure remained in continuous use by horses (and buggies), automobiles and pedestrians until just a few years ago. Covered bridges were very common in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Since the primary building material of the era was wood and bridges were very expensive to build and maintain, they were often covered with a roof and walls to protect the critical load-bearing components from the weather. Each year in June, Elizabethton hosts the annual Covered Bridge Celebration featuring arts & crafts, Kid's Island (fun activities for children), Bluegrass music, great food and lots more!
