Daytona Migi - 1952 MG Replica
A few days ago I was driving through Abingdon, Virginia when I saw this car
parked alongside the road. I pulled over and asked the owner if I could take a
picture. He said "Sure, go ahead". I asked what make and model it was
and he told me it was a 1952 MG. I
snapped some pictures, thanked him and left.
After making the decision to feature this interesting automobile as a "Picture Of The Day", I
started doing a bit of research on it. It turns out that this car isn't an MG at
all, and it definitely wasn't built in 1952. It is actually a replica of a 1952
MG that was most likely built in the 1970s by a company called Migi of
Daytona Beach, Florida.
After visiting a few websites that deal in kit cars and speaking with my brother
Glen (a VW enthusiast), it became apparent that the Migi kit car replicas are
just as interesting as the real MGs. The Daytona Migi in this photograph was
built using a Volkswagen Beetle frame and engine. Glen explained that many old
VWs are easy to customize - just remove 30 bolts, lift off the body and replace
it with a fiberglass replica body of your choosing.
So the next time you see an interesting "vintage" automobile going
down the road, be aware that it might not be the real thing - it could be a kit
car!
