Nighttime View Of "Mollie" (Virginia Creeper Engine #433)
Click photo to enlarge
At the Abingdon,
Virginia trailhead of the world-famous
Virginia Creeper Trail
sits
Engine #433, affectionately known as "Mollie" to friends of the
trail. Mollie earned her keep for many years by pulling countless
carloads of lumber, iron ore and other cargo up the steep inclines
that lay between the small town of
Damascus and
Whitetop
Mountain.
Today, Mollie rests at the head of the Creeper Trail where she greets every
hiker and biker that takes off down the same path she took for so
many years. Engine #433 had a tough job during her working years,
but these days all she has to do is look pretty for her visitors. And that
she does - especially at night when several spotlights accent her
best features!
The wrought-iron fence and trees that surround her make getting a good
photograph of
Mollie almost impossible, but if you visit her in person you'll be
treated to a spectacular view of one of the country's most beloved
locomotives. So the next time you're in Abingdon, why
not take a relaxing walk down the Virginia Creeper Trail? And while
you're there, be sure to stop by and check out Mollie. Even though her
long career of hard labor came to an end over 30 years ago, Engine
#433 still stands proud as a constant reminder of a simpler time
when trains ruled the world of transportation.
