An East Tennessee Exotic Animal Farm
Zebras and ostriches and giraffes, oh my! And several other species of exotic
animals as well. That's what you'll see if you pay attention as you travel along
highway 11E between Jonesborough and Greeneville, Tennessee.
My wife and I recently went on a day trip to Chattanooga with my brother and
sister-in-law, and as soon as we had pulled out of their driveway he said he had
something to show us. He drove us down 11E for a few miles, then told us to look
in the field on the right-hand side of the road. There, behind what must have
been a 20 foot fence, were all kinds of exotic animals.
He stopped the truck and we grabbed our cameras to take some pictures. The
animals were a good distance away from us but we managed to get off a few good
shots, including the one above.
What we were looking at wasn't a zoo because there were signs all over the fence
saying just that. There were also rather stern warnings not to get too close
to the fence along with an advisory that the facility wasn't open to the public.
My guess is it's a privately owned exotic animal farm, but I have no idea who
owns it or why they're pasturing the animals.
