Green Spring Presbyterian Church - Abingdon, Va
On a hill not far from the beautiful and historic southwestern Virginia town of
Abingdon sits one of the country's most scenic churches: Green Spring
Presbyterian Church. With roots that date all the way back to the 1780s, the
history of Green Spring is as rich as that of Abingdon itself.
The Green Spring community takes its name from a fresh-water spring that is
lined with green pebbles. It is near this beautiful, refreshing spring that the
first members of Green Spring Presbyterian Church met in a log cabin on land
donated by local Revolutionary War hero Captain James Montgomery. The "log
cabin" church building was torn down in 1882 to make way for the building of a
new church in 1886 - which burned down 35 years later.
The cornerstone of the present Green Spring Presbyterian Church building was
laid in 1923, and this beautiful House of God has been in continuous use ever
since with the very same doctrinal standards as originally observed back at the
first meeting in the late 18th century. The Presbyterian church played a major
role in the settlement of southwestern Virginia and it is still just as vibrant
and influential today, and Green Spring Presbyterian Church is still doing its part to
help keep that
long-standing tradition alive.
