This is probably a cliché, but protecting your site is a full time job. If a site is left unattended for even a short period of time, the ever waiting hackers will swoop in and destroy your site in seconds. As Nicolette Sheridan would say, ‘you can’t trust the Internet’ and for good reason. As a result, I have a huge interest in security Plugins for WordPress.
I know it isn’t possible to fully protect a site from hackers, but there are steps that can be taken to protect WP sites. This is the reason I am sharing with you some easy steps that I took in order to protect my sites, and so far, they seem to be working alright.
Remember, if you take the following steps you will be making sure that all the hard work that you put into your site is protected since hackers hack sites for the sheer fun of it.
Backing Up Your Site
If you need to protect your WordPress site, then you need to back it up. In case of an attack you can start all over again with the backups that you have created.
- MyEASYbackup – MyEASYbackup is one plugin WordPress plugin that I highly recommend. You can be able to back up your site and all data with a single click. Therefore, you can protect your data easily and quickly. In addition, it is possible for a person to store all pertinent data and folders remotely on another location. So, it is a great plugin that I use to date.
- WP DB Manager – WP DB Manager is also another useful WordPress back-up plugin. It not only offers backing up of data, but it also helps in data restoration as well as repairs. It is a plugin that I can personally vouch for.
Protect Your Passwords
It is also important that you always protect your passwords. Poorly stored passwords may fall into the wrong hands, and this will make a site very vulnerable. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that you protect your passwords.
- AskApache Password Protect – AskApache Password Protect is a great plugin that can help protect your passwords. It offers protection to a site by stopping any automated and unskilled site attacks. I have been using it for sometime now and it works great.
- HTTP Authentication – While the HTTP Authentication works by ensuring that it authenticates all persons who access a WP site. Unauthorized access is stopped dead in its tracks.
To Protect your WordPress Site
The use of out-dated software and Plugins is another way through which hackers can get into your site. So, you always need to make sure that all software and Plugins that you are using are updated.
Here are some of our picks:
- WP Security Scan – WP Security Scan is a great plugin that usually scans your site and informs you of any updates that need to be carried out, in WordPress Genesis framework and Theme. Therefore, when using this plugin you are always sure that your site will have the latest updates.
- WP File Monitor – WP File Monitor is also another great plugin that I think all WordPress users ought to have. It usually monitors files and alerts the administrator if there is any file change that occurs.
So, if you are looking to protect your WordPress site, these six Plugins will ensure that all hackers are kept at bay, and that your site is safe from any attacks. However, I believe that these are not the only ones, there are many other security Plugins that you can try out, and the best thing is that most of them are free. As Bill Gates would put it ‘If you can’t make it good, at least make it look good.
