Whether you get to see your grandkids everyday or every few years, you undoubtedly want to make the most of that precious time. However, it can often be tough to come up with ideas for activities that keep you and your little buddies happy. Here are some ideas of things you can do to make those special visits extra memorable!
Reminisce about days gone by
If you think your grandkids aren’t interested in the “good old days,” think again! Older kids especially would probably be fascinated to hear about how things used to be. Pull out old photo albums or scrapbooks to show them pictures of you, your family, and your friends, and talk about some of your most fond memories.
Make sure, though, that you don’t go overboard with this one! Your grandkids will most likely enjoy a trip down memory lane, but not if that trip lasts for 4 or 5 hours. Make sure you listen to your grandchild; appreciate their input and respond to their questions. Also, take cues from your grandchild to help determine when they might be ready to move on to something else.
Get outside
The young and old alike could always use more fresh air. Even very young children will love getting out of the house, whether you only make it as far as the front yard or venture out to that park down the street. When you do this, don’t be in a rush! Toddlers especially will enjoy taking their time to explore rocks or flowers. Follow their cues!
Of course, leaving the house could present new dangers as well, so make sure you can keep up with your little one, or that there is an older child there to help you out. Keep them within arms reach whenever possible, and be sure to hold hands when crossing the street or climbing steps or curbs.
Take in a movie
This is a great one for getting in a little downtime. Many “kids” movies today are actually pretty entertaining for adults as well, so you don’t have to worry too much about being bored to tears for an hour or so. And don’t think you have to make a special trip out to the theater. Most kids will love just staying at home to re-watch an old favorite.
This can be a great way to get in some quiet time, but don’t expect it to be picture perfect! Kids will most likely have a hard time sitting perfectly still for the whole movie, and they’ll probably need snacks and/or trips to the bathroom to keep them comfortable. Keep them entertained by talking to them about the movie and letting them get up when they need to.
Make something together
Whether it’s a puzzle, a craft, or some chocolate chip cookies, creating something together can be a great, inexpensive way to pass the time. Get creative about what you can make, and try to choose age appropriate activities for your grandkids. Homemade popsicles could be an easy and fun treat for a hot day. A watercolor or finger painted masterpiece could serve as a great memento of the day. Some beads and yarn could keep little girls busy making jewelry for hours! Get creative – your grandkids will be sure to love it!
Being a grandparent can be so rewarding! Make the most of the time you have to spend with your grandkids by planning activities that both you and they will find enjoyable. A little effort will go a long way toward making priceless memories!
