Learning new things is quite fun – but yes, it is a bit intimidating. However, once a person begins to engage in new activities or areas of learning, the learning curve gets less wide. It becomes easier the more you do something or engage new material.
Is there something you always wanted to learn how to do, but you were too “busy,” “scared,” or lacked follow-through? Now is a good a time as any, right?
Consider the following four things that everyone needs to learn how to do:
1 – Change a Car Tire
If you’re a guy, you’re just expected to know how to do this. If you’re a gal, you’re likely expected to have someone else do it. In an ideal world, it would be great if we could be what others wanted, wouldn’t it? In this world, it’s a great feeling to know you don’t have to rely on others if you find yourself in a jam – like a flat-tire jam.
Be honest. Do you really know how to change a tire? Do you know where your jack is located in your vehicle? Do you know what a jack is? Learning is very empowering. It reminds us that our minds do have influence over matter. Don’t be discouraged. Give it a try.
2 – Do Your Own Taxes
If you are the CEO of multi-million dollar company, then yes, make sure you get a professional accountant to ensure all your t’s are crossed and i’s are dotted. For the majority of us, it’s not extremely difficult to learn how to do your taxes. There are a number of websites and resources that can help you through the process.
Just like above, once you learn, you won’t be dependent on others in the future. Heck, if you like it, you may be able to earn some extra cash helping others. Additionally, going through your own finances may inspire you to change the way you go about your spending.
3 – Learn Self-Defense
Do you ever feel a bit intimidated in situations, whether you’re alone at night, or at a crowded, rowdy bar? Does the notion of being accosted scare you to death?
No one likes to think of harm being done to them, but the world is not a perfect place. Sometimes there is no other way to remove yourself from a bad situation than to react to a potential source of harm. Scour the Yellow Pages or the web and you’re sure to find a source of self-defense classes, whether it takes the shape of a martial arts class or street-smart self-defense class.
4 – Learn a New Language
How many languages do you speak? Regardless of your locale, it’s likely there are natives who speak several tongues. Have you ever heard a foreign language and wish it wasn’t so foreign to you? Take the initiative to learn Russian, Chinese, Italian, or whatever language you desire. Imagine being able to communicate with others in their own language. Imagine the surprise of a native speaker, when you learn Russian and are able to communicate with them in the language of their land?
