Are you stuck for inspiration? Compiling a heart-felt message within a “Get Well” card is a difficult task, particularly if the person you are writing it for is suffering terminally or has overcome something life-threatening.
Studies have shown that positive encouragement, coupled with humor and social interaction has assisted those who are ill, significantly speeding up the recovery process. This is, in part, thanks to the projected wishes and positive thoughts communicated through Get Well Greeting Cards, along with the appropriate get well sentiments that are tailored to the individual.
Setting The Tone
The tone of your card is largely dependent upon it’s intended recipient, and why he/she is under the weather. A friend or colleague with whom you are well acquainted, may have broken a limb in a fall. Under these circumstances, it is generally acceptable to use some form of humour, or “banter” within your card, applicable to injury. Having said that, the tone of such comedy should also reflect the nature of the accident. If your friend was involved in something horrific, such as a car crash, it’s doubtful they will want any reference made to that incident as it brings back difficult memories.
Relatives and friends suffering from terminal illness are generally the most difficult to write for. Writing etiquette suggests you avoid any reference to their illness or stay in hospital, while retaining some formality with the card itself. Phrases such as: “in sympathy”, “thinking of you” and “thoughts are with you at this time” are generally the most advisable. Avoid using the term “difficult time” or “at this time of illness”. These are both negatively impacting and the last thing you want, is a card that depresses your relative further.
Prose and Poetry
Poetry can be an extremely creative way of expressing sentiment, and is traditionally used within many cards to add a touch of personalization. Generic get well cards tend to be impersonal in message. Somehow the card with the beautiful picture fails to sum up your well-wishing in the best way. With greeting card software, you can include any type of poetry or prose of your choosing, either your own, or something published (providing it is purely for personal use).
Poetry does not have to be of particularly high standard, and you don’t necessarily have to stick with the basal rules either, although it’s probably advisable not to go with a haiku in your card.
Sentimental Examples:
With the best of wishes,
This card is to say
We send you our love, and hope
You feel better by the day.
Here’s hoping this card brings a smile,
And shows how much you mean.
We’re glad to hear you’re on the mend,
Despite how tough it’s been.
Humorous Examples:
Another excuse to skive from work,
You gave us quite a scare,
Here’s hoping that fall down the stairs,
Only bruised your derrière.
Get well soon you slacker,
Because you’re missed so very much,
If there’s anything we can do,
Don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Sorry to hear you’re under the weather,
But it gave us time to think,
We need to get you back on your feet,
And out for a much needed drink.
Inspirational Messages
Sometimes, a simple sentiment doesn’t seem to do justice to a card, and philosophy can add some depth. Consider using some words of encouragement from your friend’s / relative’s favorite author, philosopher or poet. Such inclusions can often make a card far more personal, and show you took time to research something important to that person. Uplifting words are great for benefiting someone who is sad, or confined to a hospital bed, often giving them hope in the darkest of times.
Natural Instinct
Sure, poems and phrases can be morally uplifting, but sometimes, the greatest words and messages are those that come straight from the heart. Write what you truly feel, convey your deep sentiment and sympathy, but always maintain a positive outlook in whatever wording you choose to include.
