If you live in an older house you’re probably spending a lot more than necessary to heat your home. Why? Well, there are a couple of reasons:
1 – Most older windows are single paned which means they’re pretty inefficient at keeping the warm air inside the building. Newer, more efficient double paned windows have an insulating layer of air or argon gas which helps keep heat loss to an absolute minimum.
2 – Older windows often have heat-leaking cracks between the glass and the frame which allow a surprisingly large amount of cold air in and warm air out. These cracks are sometimes too small to see with the naked eye, but the air sure can find them!
Modern double paned replacement windows are sealed tight, keeping your precious warm air right where it needs to be: inside your home! Most models also help block outside noise and ultraviolet light from entering, and many tilt in for easy cleaning.
If you live in a cold climate opt for gas-filled windows that are framed with wood, vinyl or fiberglass. If your climate is moderately warm you’ll be fine installing less expensive air-filled aluminum framed windows. Several styles of replacement windows are available, and although the expense for purchasing and installing them might make your wallet a little lighter in the short run, that investment will pay off quite handsomely in lower fuel bills and added comfort for many years to come!
