Saving money on car repairs

Posted on May 11, 2011

Far too many body shops charge ridiculously high prices for repairs that could be done for far less money by someone who is being honest about the price, or even by yourself! That’s right, many of the little things we take our car to the body shop for are things you can fix yourself, allowing your to save money on car repairs.

For example, if you need to replace your windshield wipers, you can easily do it yourself. Just head over to your local Wal-Mart or auto parts store and grab a pair. Just make sure to match the windshield wipers to your type of car because if you get the wrong kind, they won’t fit correctly. The wiper blade itself snaps on quite easily and you won’t need any tools.

The power of ‘FREE’

Posted on May 10, 2011

It’s amazing what we will do to get something for free.

Take Wi-Fi for example. This morning, I decided to try out a new coffee shop. Since my laptop has become essentially an extension of my arm, I just assume (mistakenly) that every coffee shop offers free Wi-Fi.

They had great coffee. But you had to pay for access to their wireless network. Being a cheapskate at heart, I refused.

Instead, I hopped back on my scooter and wasted gas driving to go to another coffee shop. Then I proceeded to spend another $2 on another cup of coffee. So here I am overly caffeinated and pondering the psychology of spending.

5 gadgets for a great vacation

Posted on May 10, 2011

Are you planning a vacation this year? Remember to leave some room in your suitcase for handy vacation gadgets that make your trip away just a little bit easier. Whether you are travelling near or far, are planning a trek in the Himalayas or a simple beach vacation in Spain, there are different gadgets that will help to enhance your time away. Here are just a few of them:

1 – Amazon Kindle

Books are big and bulky, and you might need to carry quite a few if you are an avid reader or are planning to travel for a longer period of time. Avoid losing pages and lugging around heavy books simply by investing in an electronic book reader, such as a Kindle.

These useful devices tend to weigh less than an average paperback and can store thousands of books, all of which are available to read at the touch of a button. Low glare screens mean you can easily read in brighter conditions if you are lucky enough to be visiting a sunny country and battery saving tricks can prolong battery life for a few weeks so you might not even need to take the charger.

Lightning struck my computer. Can it be fixed?

Posted on May 10, 2011

Question:

Our house was hit by lightning and now my Dell desktop computer won’t come on. I can’t understand how it was damaged because I always unplug it from the wall before leaving for work in the mornings. The monitor and printer seem to be ok (I tried them on another computer) but my cable modem and router are fried to a crisp and so is the surge protector they were plugged into.

My question is can the computer be fixed? And if it can, will it be expensive? I can easily replace the router and cable modem, but the PC cost over $1000 just a little over a year ago.   –Kim Whieleg

How to choose a swing set for your kids

Posted on May 9, 2011

Most every kid loves to play on a swing, and as a result swing sets are among the most popular outdoor toy items sold in the United States every year. Some sets are as simple as a couple of flat swings and a slide while others include monkey bars, teeter-totters and other specialty play sections.

When I was a little girl our family didn’t own a swing set. My dad simply fashioned a swing from an oak board and a couple of ropes and then attached it to a limb on the huge maple tree that stood in our back yard.

It’s hard to tell just how many “kid hours” my sister and I spent pushing each other on that wonderful home-made swing, but every single one of them was a thrill. Even so, we always dreamed of having a “store-bought swing set” like the one the kids across the street had.
