Can social media really drive traffic to your website?

Posted on March 5, 2011

Social media is all the rage these days. After all, how many people do you know personally who don’t have either a Facebook or MySpace account? Chances are many of your friends and acquaintances have both!

The fact is pretty much everyone spends at least a few minutes each day checking out the latest happenings on Facebook, and “Tweets” are interrupting dinner more often than telemarketers of late. So in a nutshell, social media indeed has the potential to drive a steady stream of traffic to your website – but only if you go about it in the right way.

Why your WordPress blog needs a Related Posts plugin

Posted on March 4, 2011

One of the greatest advantages to using WordPress to power your blog is the abundance of wonderful plugins that can enhance the functionality and usability of your blog. And in my opinion a “must have” plugin for any blog is one that displays a list of posts related to the one the visitor is reading at the time.

After trying out several “Related Post” plugins on my blogs, I decided to go with one called Contextual Related Posts by Ajay D’Souza. This plugin automatically analyzes the current post, then displays a list of posts that are similar to it directly below it. When the reader gets to the end of the post, he/she can then easily click on over to another post dealing with the same topic. This keeps your visitors on your site longer.

Another powerful benefit of the Contextual Related Posts plugin is the cross-linking of posts within your site. Cross-linking helps search engine robots find and index all of your pages quickly, making it even easier for searchers to find YOUR content in the midst of the constantly rising sea of web pages.

Apple announces release of the iPad 2

Posted on March 3, 2011

Steve Jobs took the stage at yesterday’s iPad event to announce the release of the iPad 2, the second generation of the tablet device that has taken the tech world by storm since its release last April.

The iPad 2 boasts a number of improvements and upgrades, including a dual core A5 processor, both front and rear facing cameras, a gyroscope, up to 64 GB of storage, and an even thinner 8.4mm case. It also weighs slightly less than the original.

It remains to be seen whether the iPad 2 will match the orginal iPad in sales since Apple sold a mind-boggling 3 million units just in the first 80 days after its release, but it’s sure to be a hot seller at any rate. Retail prices for the Wi-Fi only version will range from $499 – $699 while the 3G version will go for $629 – $829. The iPad 2 is scheduled go on sale on March 11 at Best Buy, Wal-Mart and other autorized retailers.

Quick way to get to the destination URL for an Adsense ad

Posted on March 3, 2011

The Google Adsense program has allowed thousands of webmasters to turn what once were simple “hobby sites” into serious money-making enterprises. Simply sign up for the program, paste a snippet code on the page, then sit back and watch your visitors click to YOUR heart’s content. It really is that simple.

The key to success with Adsense is making sure the ads displayed perfectly match the topic of the page on which they’re placed. About 95% of the time the Google Media Bot does a great job at determining the theme of the page, and the ads are right on target. But the other 5% can have you pulling your hair out on a daily basis. Off-topic ads don’t usually get clicked, which means they don’t earn any money for you.

Google has provided a fast and easy way to block off-topic ads from showing up on your site(s). All you have to do is log into your Adsense account and add the landing page URL for the offending ads to the Competitive Ad Filter. But how do you find out what the landing page URL is without clicking on your own ads (which will quickly get you kicked out of the program)? Well, here’s the fastest way I have found to date:

5 tips for choosing a great web hosting company

Posted on March 2, 2011

Let’s face it, at some point most webmasters will need to switch web hosting companies for one reason or another, and the success or failure of your web business just might depend on choosing a good one. Here are five tips for choosing a great web hosting company:

1. Ask for referrals and follow up with them. The best indicator of the quality of a web host is the satisfaction of their existing customers. If the vast majority of their customers are happy, chances are you will be too. You can also check out the more popular webmaster forums and ask for opinions about the companies you’re considering moving your site(s) to.

2 – Call the company’s customer service line and ask a technical question. Be sure to evaluate factors such as hold time and the representative’s attitude and technical expertise. If you’re satisfied with the experience when the call is over, wait 15 minutes and call again. You’ll more than likely be connected to a different rep. If the experience is good once again, you’ll probably be in good shape as far as the company’s customer service goes.
