Spring is quickly approaching, and that means it won’t be long before we’ll be mowing our lawns again. Is your lawnmower ready to “hit the ground running”? Here are a few tips for preparing your mower for the upcoming season:
– Drain any gasoline remaining from last season from the tank and dispose of it in accordance with local rules and regulations. You can do this either by using a siphon pump to suck the gas out of the tank or by tilting the mower until the gas drains into a pan.
– With the gas tank empty, drain the oil from the mower as well by tilting it over until it drains out.
– Remove the blade and inspect it for damage. Look for large gaps in the cutting edge or to see if it is bent or warped. If any of these problems are present, replace the blade with a new one. While the blade is off, scrape any caked-on debris such as dried grass from the bottom of the mower deck. Finally, if the blade appears to be in good condition, sharpen it and then install it back onto the mower.
– Inspect the air filter. If it appears dirty or clogged, replace it.
– Replace the spark plug. This should be done every year.
– Fill the engine with new oil according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
– Fill the gas tank with fresh gasoline.
– Start the mower and let it run for a few minutes.
Once you have completed the tasks above you’ll know that your lawnmower is prepared to take on another long season of keeping your lawn nice and trim!
