Hiking the Appalachian Trail from start to finish is the life goal of most serious hikers. Spanning almost 2,200 miles, this awesome footpath takes “through-hikers” past crystal clear mountain streams and lakes, ages-old trees, and animals ranging from salamanders to the majestic North American black bear and moose. And of course there are also countless stunning mountaintop views!
In “Three Hundred Zeroes: Lessons of the heart on the Appalachian Trail”, author Dennis R. Blanchard tells the wonderful story of his own adventure hiking the Appalachian Trail all the way from Springer Mountain, Georgia to Mount Katahdin, Maine.
For Mr. Blanchard, a journey that began as an attempt to keep a boyhood promise he once made to his brother turned into the journey of a lifetime. In addition to learning just how beautiful and rugged the Appalachian Mountains really are when viewed up close and personal, Mr. Blanchard aso learned a lot about himself that he never would have discovered had he not taken that monumental hike.
This review is rather timely with Appalachian Trail Days kicking off this week in the beautiful little town of Damascus, Virginia. But even if you can’t make it out to enjoy the festivities, you can still enjoy this wonderful book. The Appalachian Trail has spawned a million stories over the decades, and in my opinion this is one of the very best you will ever read.
