The biggest thing that affects a relationship is trust. Many couples never learn how to trust the other one. They are always those couples who are constantly worrying about whether the other one is cheating or lying to them.
The only way that a couple will ever be happy is if they trust one another. You will always have a partner who works with someone of the opposite sex or they may have lifelong friends who are of the opposite sex.
The key thing in any relationship is to trust because no matter what kind of job your partner has, they will be around others that are the opposite sex, it is just how the two of you communicate that will determine if your relationship will get that trust factor before it is too late. My friend, who happens to earn a nurse practitioner salary, always talks about this with me.
When you are totally and brutally honest with your partner, it builds trust which will get them to not only trust you, but they will trust you with what they tell you. This creates a building block in your relationship that will keep building, for the better.
As you gain trust, so does your partner. If you tell your partner that you are out having drinks with a coworker of the opposite sex, invite your partner to come with you. This will show them that just because you are having some drinks, it does not mean that they are going to cheat. As you do this, your partner will begin to do the same thing when they are with friends and coworkers of the opposite sex. As the two of you are open and honest with each other, you gain trust which is vital to any relationship.
Don’t Overanalyze
My husband works as a firefighter which means that not only is he out of town a lot but he goes out of town with other women a lot. I could sit at home with my time standing still, worrying about if he is cheating on me or I could trust that I am the only one that he will come home to. It didn’t happen overnight since trust is not something that you just give out, it has to be earned. It did take me a lot of sleepless nights with him gone but he has always come home to me and he has never given me any reason to not trust him.
Keep Your Partner Informed
He is also in charge of a group of young guys, most of them not married but all of them are in relationships. A couple weeks ago they all went to an out of town class where they stayed in hotels for a night and all wanted to go out and enjoy the town. They were all shocked when my husband called me to tell me that he was at Hooters having a beer with the guys. They all realized that he was honest with me which made me trust him. After all, why would he call me from Hooters if he knew he was just going to do something stupid?
I knew that he was just out having fun with the guys and that was fine with me. He explained to all of these young guys that this is how we have built the trust that we have for each other which prompted them to call each of their girlfriends. To their surprise, their girlfriends all understood, none got mad and they all gained some level of trust in their new relationship.
My husband and I recently celebrated our 8th wedding anniversary and in that time, he has been out of town with women, went out drinking with these women and even had an old female friend come to visit him at his hotel room. I could have gone into a jealous rage but I know my husband and I know that he will not do anything to risk the trust that I have in him.
This trust took us a long time to build since we had both been burned in the past but in the long run, it was worth the hard work that it has took us both to get to the place where we are at today.
