If you’ve got straight hair, you want curly hair and if you’ve got wavy hair…you’ve guessed it, you want straight hair! Us ladies are just never happy with our beautiful, natural, normal selves are we?
Throughout the ages, women have continually tormented themselves with such quests of wanting opposite styles to their normal locks. The popularity of curly hair styles has varied throughout the last decade, with celebrity curls such as, Myleene Klass and Katie Melua taking the forefront as top curly haired style icons.
It is relatively easy to go from straight to curly these days, with the wide range of styling and curling tong products now available on the market. Most women can make the smooth transition between these styles with the greatest of ease. Gone are the ‘good old days’, when you had to spend hours putting in loads of curlers on a night to achieve that bouncy curly look for the morning. Which is amazing news as you never got a good night sleep with those horrible things stuck to your head, which left most brides to be with a stiff neck and feeling irritably groggy on their big day!
The eternal struggle between straight and curly hair wages on in the hair industry, with the likes of Cheryl Cole (X-Factor and Girls Aloud) and Beyonce Knowles promoting the more smooth and sleek look, opposed to the more natural wavy/curly hairstyles. Another pioneer on the straight and sleek hair style front is the infamous ‘Rachel hair du’, donned by Jennifer Aniston in the hit TV show ‘Friends’. This saw a dramatic increase in women of all ages annoying their hairdressers with snippets from fashion magazines of Rachel, hoping to achieve her layered, straight sexy look.
What women need to do is accept their natural hair styles as they are, whether that is long flowing straight hair or tightly wounded little ringlets. As both are beautiful and unique to that specific woman in their own special way. Too much money is spent on hair treatments and products such as curling tongs, hair straighteners, heat protection sprays, conditioning hair masks and shampoos. These often go against women’s natural hair styles and over a period of time of use end up damaging their hair (and pocket!) permanently.
Hence, all women across the globe should be happy with whatever ever ‘God given’ hairstyle they were born with, although as the title of this article states, we always long for what we don’t have. The bitter sweet irony being that many natural curly tots, will be the envy of their straight haired peers…which springs to mind the aged old premises that the grass is always greener on the other side.
Be happy with what you’ve got ladies and let your natural beauty shine through in every way!
But fundamentally, women as a species have rarely been completely happy or satisfied with their natural appearance, which is all good news for the hair and beauty industry at least!!
