Its rich history, captivating culture and classic architecture make Madrid,
Spain
truly one of the world's great capitol cities. The history of Madrid dates
all the way back to the late 800's AD, a time of great expansion and conquest
throughout Europe and the Middle East, but today Madrid is a vibrant city of over 3
million people.
In addition to its role as the capitol of Spain, Madrid is also a major business
center and popular tourist destination. Its location at the center of the
Iberian Peninsula makes travel to and from many places in Europe and along
the Mediterranean very easy and painless. In fact, when planning a European
vacation, the exquisite city of Madrid makes an ideal starting point!
One of the first things tourists notice about Madrid is the beautiful classic
architecture of the buildings, a fine example of which is featured in today's
picture: the ornate Banco de España building. Photographer Nouna Andersson
snapped this beautiful photo and a whole bunch more while accompanying her
parents on an April 2005 trip to Spain.
