The Martha Washington Inn
Today's photo features a very popular Abingdon,
Va landmark, the beautiful and historic Martha
Washington Inn.
The Martha Washington Inn has a rich history dating back to the early 19th
century. She has at times served as:
- The private home of General Francis Preston, a local hero of the
American Civil War
- The Martha Washington College for Women
- A makeshift hospital for soldiers wounded in the Civil War
- Barracks for a local militia unit called the Washington
Mounted Rifles
Today, the stately old ornate building is home to the world class hotel we know
and love as The Martha Washington Inn. If you ever have the
opportunity to visit historic Abingdon and southwestern Virginia, be sure to
spend a night or two enjoying the ambiance of true American history provided by
The Martha Washington Inn.
