The McLain Family Performing At The Carter Fold
Any time you visit the
Carter Family Fold
in Hiltons, Va,
you're sure to be well entertained by a wonderful
Bluegrass or Old-Time music
band. But when Cheria and I decided to take in last Saturday's show we had no
idea what a great performance the McLain Family would give!
We were already familiar with Raymond McLain and his mastery of all types of
stringed instruments because we
have had the opportunity to see him perform several times with the ETSU Bluegrass
Band, an outstanding group of young students under the tutelage of Raymond, Jack
Tottle and other Bluegrass masters in East Tennessee State University's highly
popular Bluegrass and Country Music Program. What we didn't know is that
Raymond is a member of a veritable Bluegrass music dynasty - the McLain Family.
Raymond and his sisters Ruth, Alice and Nancy Ann grew up in Hindman, KY, a
small Appalachian mountain town where Bluegrass music was considered mainstream.
Their father, Raymond K. McLain was an accomplished musician and singer and he
taught his children to love and perform right along with him.
To date, the McLain family has thrilled audiences in over 60 countries with
their spirited instrumental work and smooth family harmonies, but we hope to see
them performing around here a lot more often!
