An Old Barn Near Meadowview, Virginia
A few days ago, Cheria and I went out for a drive to take in some of the
newly-arrived winter scenery. We weren't going any place in particular, just
turning down whatever country road that interested us at the time. We were just about ready
to turn back onto the main highway and head towards home when we spotted this
old long-abandoned barn near Meadowview, Virginia.
Like many old barns in our area, this one probably held its last
bale of hay,
crop of tobacco, or
whatever it was they kept in it many years ago. The field in front of the barn
has grown up in weeds and brush and the back side of the building is almost
completely covered with kudzu vine.
I can't be certain, but judging by the architecture I believe this building
probably started out as something other than a barn - perhaps an old one-room schoolhouse
or maybe even a church. After all, converting empty buildings of all types into
barns is a fairly common practice around here.
The once largely agricultural Washington County, Virginia is now being
transformed into one large residential community, but for now at least this old
barn still stands as a reminder of our area's farming heritage.
