Today's picture features a stunning view of Bend, Oregon's Mt. Bachelor, a
dormant 9,065 foot volcanic peak that dominates its snowy Cascade Mountain
landscape. Although Mt. Bachelor last erupted some 8,000 - 10,000 years ago,
there is ample visual evidence that it is indeed a volcano.
Today, the entire cone of Mt. Bachelor is used as a world-famous ski resort.
There are runs available for all skill levels from beginner to advanced, and the
3,365 foot skiable vertical drop makes for quite a downhill skiing experience!
Mt. Bachelor has plenty of excitement waiting for snowboarders as well. Lifts
are available for a large number of the trails, and best of all, with nearly 400
inches of natural snow falling each year there is never a need for "man-made"
snow!
Even if you aren't into skiing or snowboarding you'll still find plenty to do at
Mt. Bachelor. Rock-climbing and spelunking activities can be found in the many
lava tubes. Also, trout fishing, kayaking and rafting are available on the
nearby lakes and several golf courses are just a short drive away. Other
exciting activities too numerous to mention are also available.
Whether you enjoy playing in the great outdoors or simply love spectacular
mountain vistas, you're sure to have a wonderful time on a Mt. Bachelor
vacation. The city of Bend has many motels that offer excellent lodging and lift
ticket packages, but be sure to book your reservations early because Mt.
Bachelor is one of the most popular ski resorts in the western United
States!
