Every day at noon during the Virginia Highlands Festival
there is a free concert featuring a wide variety of local and
national musicians representing several musical genres. Today's
featured performer was
Reagan Boggs,
a southwestern Virginia native who grew up in the small coal mining
town of Pound.
Reagan's childhood had its share of sadness and heartache. She still
remembers the many times that her tearful mom had to load up the
kids and take them away from the house when her unpredictable
alcoholic father went on one of his frequent rampages. It was music
that provided the solace she so desperately needed in order for her
to survive such a trying childhood.
Reagan stepped onto a stage for the very first time at the tender
age of 8. Granted, it was only the annual 4-H show at J.W. Adams
Elementary School, but that first taste of being in the spotlight
changed the extremely introverted Reagan's life forever. For the
first time in her life, she was the center of attention and the
other kids began paying attention to her. She loved that feeling
then and she still loves it today.
At 17, she recorded her first album entitled "Somewhere In The
Middle", and shortly after that she took a trip to Nashville
where she had the privilege of playing at the world-famous Bluebird
Café. There she was, performing on a stage that had been graced by
some of the biggest names in Country music. Young Reagan Boggs had
found her calling.
At various times in her career, Reagan has performed with Country,
Blues, and Rock bands, but today her music tends to lean towards an
eclectic Country/Bluegrass style influenced somewhat by those other
musical genres. Her powerful, yet honey-smooth voice is one of the
best in the business, and she puts on a very entertaining show every
time she steps onto a stage.
This young lady has transcended a reclusive childhood spent in a
depressing Appalachian "holler", and she now performs regularly in
front of crowds both large and small all over the country. Her life
seems far removed from the tiny coal-mining town of Pound, Virginia,
but her music will forever be influenced by her experiences there.
