Robby Spencer Pickin' At The Lincoln Theatre
Today's picture features Robby Spencer thrilling the audience at
yesterday evening's Song Of The Mountains show with his trademark
clawhammer style banjo pickin'. Robby was backed up by the VW
Boys (Tim White, Larry McPeak and Dave Vaught), who also played the
"straight men" for his ever-present down-home humor.
Robby Spencer is quite an interesting guy. As a child, he gave up on the piano and lost
interest in music after just six months of lessons, only to regain it as a
teenager after being inspired by an old Carter
Family record. He soon took a keen interest in Grandpa Jones' drop-thumb
clawhammer banjo style, and he eventually had the good fortune to wrangle a
lesson from Grandpa himself.
Today, Robby's mastery of the banjo
would make Grandpa proud. He combines his always masterful pickin' with a unique
way of telling corn-pone jokes for a very enjoyable show indeed!
Song Of The Mountains is a wonderful concert series showcasing the
region's amazingly talented Bluegrass
and Old-Time Music performers at the beautifully restored Lincoln Theatre in
downtown Marion, Virginia. A collaboration of the Lincoln and Blue Ridge Public
Television, Friday and Saturday nights' Song Of The Mountains performances
were taped
for broadcast this fall on several PBS television stations.
