Rock Spring Presbyterian Church
Today's picture features beautiful Rock Spring Presbyterian Church in Lodi,
Virginia. I have passed by this church hundreds of times in my lifetime, but I
had never really paid much attention to it until yesterday. The way the sun was
peeking through the clouds and striking the rhododendrons caused me to pause and
take notice. I simply stopped the car in the middle of the road, got out, and
snapped this picture!
I really enjoy driving down country roads. To some it might sound like it would
be quite a boring activity, but I enjoy seeing new things and I'm always curious
to see just what lies around the next curve in the road.
The back roads of southwestern Virginia, like everywhere else in rural America,
has plenty of interesting and beautiful things to see. There are interesting
rock formations, caves, centuries old trees, scenic pasture fields, old barns
and houses...you name it and you're likely to find it somewhere across this
great land.
One of my favorite things to run across while I'm rambling around is a small
country church. Virtually every community in our area has at least one, and
often I'll run across two or three that are pretty close to each other. Here in
Washington County, Virginia we have churches of many denominations: Baptist,
Methodist, Presbyterian, Lutheran, Freewill Baptist, Holiness, Church of God,
Episcopal, Seventh Day Adventist, Pentecostal, Church of Christ...there are even churches that aren't affiliated with any denomination at
all!
Every time I run across one of these small country churches I always start
asking myself some questions, such as "Do I know anyone that goes there?", "Do
they believe the same way that I do?" and many others. The philosophies and core
beliefs among our many churches vary just as much as the people that go to them
so it can be quite an experience visiting a church you haven't been to before. I
guess that's one of the things that makes life so interesting.
