The beautiful and historic southwestern Virginia town of
Abingdon has several
buildings that date all the way back to the late 1700's, most notably
The Tavern
which is the oldest structure in town. On the other side of Court House Hill
from The Tavern stands a
stately old house that is almost as ancient...
Since it fits in so well with the other historic buildings of Old Abingdon, Russell House
doesn't really stand out as you pass by its Main Street location. I have lived in
this area for years, and I've probably driven through Old Abingdon thousands
of times, but I had never even noticed Russell House until the day I parked my
car and took a leisurely stroll along the red brick sidewalks.
Russell House was built in 1792 by Andrew Russell, a well-respected and
influential man who served the citizens of Washington County, Virginia as Clerk
of the Circuit Court for half a century (1791-1841). In 1876, new owner Samuel
Honaker added a large wing to the east side of the building. Today, Russell
House is home to Camella's, a quaint "Tea Parlor" and gift shop.
