Sunset At South Holston Lake

South Holston Lake Sunset

There is something very special about a sunset over a body of water as witnessed in this photo taken at South Holston Lake (near Abingdon, Va). The colorful reflection of the day's last rays cast upon the water gives you a warm, peaceful feeling that is unique in the human experience.

The South Holston River was named after Steven Holston, one of the Tennessee Valley's pioneering settlers. A large earthen dam was built on the South Holston between 1942 and 1950 as part of a bold project by the Tennessee Valley Authority to build several dams in the region to control flooding and generate electric power for use by local citizens and businesses. The resulting lake took the name of the river: South Holston Lake.

In addition to the used described above, South Holston Lake also provides many recreational activities, including:
  • Swimming
  • Boating
  • Water Skiing
  • Fishing
  • Picnics
  • Spectacular Views
South Holston Lake is just a few minutes' drive from historic Abingdon, Va and Bristol, Va-Tn.
