Some Optimistic Spring Flowers
Today's picture features some optimistic flowers that are apparently hoping to
get a jump on spring. We had an unusually mild winter here in southwestern Virginia through January and most of February, so it was no big surprise when they
burst through the ground in several of our flower beds a little over a week ago.
The problem is the first day of spring is still almost a month away, and these
eager spring flowers just might not make it until March 20. March can be a
pretty tough month in the southern Appalachians, so quite a few days with freezing
temperatures and several more significant snowfalls are a real possibility.
But I'm not ready to count these flowers out just yet. We have already had a
couple of nights with temperatures in the teens and two respectable snows since
they decided to press their luck and "come up". I suppose with an iron will and a little
mercy from the good Lord they just might make it through. Hope springs eternal as
they say - even for spring flowers!
