Sutherland Community Church
The Sutherland Community Church is located in Sutherland, TN near Backbone
Rock and just across the state line from Damascus,
Va. No, the building hasn't sunk into the earth. It was actually built with
the roof extending almost to the ground. This unique rock church is just as
beautiful inside as it is on the outside.
In the early 1900's Sutherland was a booming sawmill and logging community, but
after most of the timber had been depleted from nearby Shady Valley and the
surrounding areas Sutherland reverted back to being simply a picturesque wide
spot in the road. The Sutherland Community Church now serves the remaining
residents as well as some folks from Damascus and Shady Valley.
This photo was taken on a cold, windy day. It had been snowing like crazy but it
stopped just long enough for me to quickly snap this picture and then jump right
back in the truck to warm up!
