The Victorian Inn - Damascus, Virginia
When I was growing up in the 1970's, Damascus,
Virginia was just a sleepy little town nestled in the mountains of
southwestern Virginia. There was nothing special about the place - it had a
grocery store, a 5 & 10 Cent store, a couple of manufacturing plants,
little league baseball...it was just your typical small town in rural America. Houses
in Damascus sold for less than $10,000 then! My, how things have changed!
Not all that long ago the citizens of Damascus began to realize that their quiet
little town had several things going for it. First of all is the beautiful
scenery. Damascus is virtually surrounded by wooded hills and mountains, and the
Laurel and Beaver Dam creeks run through it. These factors work together to make
Damascus one of the most scenic towns in the country!
And then there are the trails - six of them in all, including the world-famous
Appalachian Trail and the spectacular Virginia Creeper
Trail. Thousands of
hikers and bikers visit Damascus every year providing a huge economic boost to
the town's businesses and residents. Trail Days alone brings in several
thousand visitors during its short duration, and Damascus welcomes these
visitors with open arms and friendly faces.
Several of the large old houses in Damascus have been refurbished and converted
into Bed & Breakfasts, including the one featured in today's picture - the
stately Victorian Inn! Damascus can now offer her visitors world-class accommodations
during their stay.
As a result of the town's new-found popularity, it now has a modern "Food
City" supermarket, fast-food restaurants and several busy bike rental
shops. And forget about buying cheap property here - Damascus real estate now
sells at a premium.
But while this beautiful town has profoundly changed in the last few years, it
hasn't lost it's small town charm. The people are just as friendly as ever and
you can still find a home-cooked meal at a reasonable price. If you love outdoor
activities, you'll love Damascus, so drop on in and experience all the area has
to offer for yourself!
