Wintery Farm Scene

Today's picture is of a snowy barnyard, complete with plenty of livestock... a scene that can be found at various times in most parts of the United States and
southern Canada.
Farm life is hard. Cows have to be fed... milk cows have to be milked, even in
the worst kinds of winter weather.
Family farms are going away at an astonishing rate. The economies of scale
enjoyed by corporate farms combined with plenty of cheap raw food products from
low-income countries combine to squeeze the small farming operations more and more, with
many of them no longer finding farming to be a viable way to earn a living.
All across rural America, family farms are being sold off, often ending up subdivided
into building lots or zoned for business. Farms like the one above are in danger
of becoming extinct, with the farmers being forced to find a new career.
