"Experimenting" At Backbone Rock Falls
Today's picture features the lower falls at
Sutherland,
Tennessee's Backbone
Rock Recreation Area. I have photographed
Backbone Rock Falls
before, but recently I began experimenting with slower shutter speeds in an
attempt to make the water appear to be "flowing" - and this is the result of my
latest "experiment".
For the longest time I simply left my digital camera set on the "Automatic" mode
so the camera would calculate the best shutter speed for a proper exposure under
the available lighting conditions. This is usually fine, but it tends to "freeze
the action" which makes waterfalls appear to be static. My waterfall pictures never
turned out to have that soft, "flowing water" appearance that other
photographers are able to capture...until today.
I still have room for improvement however. For example, the long shutter speed
used to capture this image resulted in the leaves in the foreground being
"washed out". But experimenting with new settings is half the fun of
photography, and it also offers an excuse to return to the beautiful Backbone Rock
area over and over again!
