Laurel Creek At The Damascus Old Mill

Laurel Creek at the Damascus Old Mill

Today's picture is a serene view of the pond behind the Damascus Old Mill Restaurant and Conference Center in Damascus, Va. Many years ago when the mill was first constructed, a dam was built across Laurel Creek to create the large pond and spillway that served as the power source for the grinding wheel.

Although the mill no longer serves its original purpose, the dam and pond remain intact, providing a favorite fishing hole and picnic spot for Damascus' visitors. Patrons of the Old Mill Restaurant can dine on the back deck which overlooks the pond and enjoy one of the area's most beautiful views.

Damascus is the converging point for three major streams. Straight Branch, which more or less parallels the Virginia Creeper Trail from the Konnarock area down to Damascus, converges with the Tennessee Laurel Creek (which is really a small river) near the eastern edge of town. The Laurel then flows on through Damascus where it merges with Beaver Dam Creek just a short distance from the town park.

Come and visit the beautiful and friendly town of Damascus, Virginia for a bit of R&R - fine lodging, great food, hiking, biking, fishing and lots more await, and all of it is available right at the Old Mill or within easy walking distance!
