My wonderful mom has always been an adventurous soul, always eager to try
something new and encourage her "kids" to do the same. God has blessed her with the better part of eight decades on this
planet and she is still going strong. Mom has done many things that most
people her age have never done - including taking a ride on both a roller coaster and a
helicopter. But until today there is one thing that she had never done...
My brother Glen and sister-in-law Tonnie are the proud owners of a bright-red
dune buggy, and although it might look small and just as cute as a "bug", it is
completely street-legal. In fact, it was built on a Volkswagen Beetle chassis
(one of the original VW Bugs). They enjoy bringing their favorite "toy"
to family functions and giving kids of all ages rides through the neighborhood
in it, and the dune buggy rides are almost always the favorite activity of the
day!
Well, it turns out that even though Glen and Tonnie's dune buggy had been at
mom's house on numerous occasions she had never had the opportunity to take a
ride in it herself. But that changed today when she hopped in and rode along
with Glen as they took a scenic ride around "the loop" - a narrow, curvy road
through the hills and hollers where I grew up.
Now mom has a new experience under her belt, one that she enjoyed very
much. Who knows what she might try next, but for someone who is approaching
octogenarian status it's sure to be quite an adventure!
