The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area
Today's picture features the W. Pat Jennings Visitor Center near
Marion, Virginia, the
gateway to the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. The MRNRA consists of
20,000 acres of some of the highest land in the Commonwealth of Virginia,
including the state's two highest peaks:
Mount Rogers and
Whitetop Mountain.
Cheria and I took our granddaughter
Olivia to Marion
a few days ago to visit the State Fish Hatchery, and while we were in the area
we decided to take the short drive up Route 16 to the MRNRA Visitor Center where
we saw many interesting displays of natural and historic artifacts as well as
books and other items for sale in the gift area. We also enjoyed talking to the
Ranger on duty, a very nice lady who just happened to be from our neck of the
woods!
The Mount Rogers National Recreation Area is a veritable paradise for those who
love nature and the outdoors. Over 400 miles of trails, several campgrounds and
numerous streams, ponds and lakes await the thousands of visitors who visit the
region every year. Whether you enjoy hiking, biking, camping, swimming, fishing,
or simply watching wildlife frolic around in its natural habitat, if you like
the outdoors you'll love southwestern Virginia and the Mount Rogers National Recreation Area!
