Robby Spencer Pickin' His Banjo
There are lots of banjo pickers in the world and many of them are quite good,
but there are a few that can make the instrument do amazing things. One of these
master banjo pickers is Bluff City, Tennessee's
Robby Spencer.
Robby is a rather unique individual. Having first picked up the banjo as a
teenager, he eventually mastered Grandpa Jones' drop-thumb clawhammer
banjo style. Today, Robby is regarded as one of the best clawhammer banjo
pickers in the country. He performs weekly on
Tim White's
Pickin' Porch Show with
Teddy Helton backing him up on standup bass.
Robby is a graduate of the Bluegrass and Country Music Program at East
Tennessee State University. He was also honored to be the very first recipient
of the Benny Sims Scholarship. This wonderful scholarship is funded entirely by
the proceeds from the Leon Kiser Tribute Show held every February at the
Paramount Theater For The Performing Arts in
Bristol, TN.
If you would like to help other young aspiring Bluegrass musicians, you're
invited to purchase a ticket to the next Leon Kiser Tribute Show. These shows
always feature several wonderful Bluegrass groups that really enjoy putting on a
show to remember. Even if you can't make it to the show, you'll feel good
about the fact that your admission fee will be used to help a young student like
Robby Spencer receive top-notch music instruction at ETSU, the only university
in the world to offer a Bachelors Degree in Bluegrass and Country Music!
