While Mesothelioma can be caused by a number of different factors, the cause of Mesothelioma in the overwhelming majority of cases is simply an exposure to asbestos. Most often the asbestos particles are taken into the lungs while breathing.
Mesothelioma can start after a single, very short exposure. Some Mesothelioma patients have developed the disease after changing the brake shoes on their car (and breathing the dust) just one time!
But those who are (or have been) exposed to asbestos for extended periods of time (at work or otherwise) are at the highest risk of developing Mesothelioma.
Workers in several different occupations where exposure is likely have an elevated risk of developing Mesothelioma.
